About
The
Global
Health Research Congress
will be launched in June 2009 and held in conjunction with the
Pacific Health Summit
and other related meetings as part of a "Global Health Week" in Seattle, Washington. The Congress
will complement these meetings by bringing together key researchers,
policy makers and funding agencies to discuss the most important recent
advances in global health research and the next best directions forward.
Its timing, just prior to the Pacific Health Summit, is chosen so that
research advances and likely future directions can help inform policy
discussions. This effort builds on the success of the Pacific Health
Summit in drawing key participants, shaping dialogue and forging
collaborations.
A key
principle behind the Congress is to make sure that policy is
informed by the most current research, and that the most current
research has the opportunity to shape policy.
The content of the Congress will be
cross-field and will focus on the most important research progress
that occurred within the last year. The meeting will be structured
to facilitate dialogue amongst invitees in order to identify the
best next steps and future directions for global health research.
The program will be developed in conjunction with the over-arching
theme of the Pacific Health Summit (e.g., TB in 2009) but will not
be exclusively focused on TB or the themes chosen in subsequent
years. We plan that nearly 200 invited participants and speakers
will attend the Congress.
The Congress
will be managed by an Organizing Committee, initially chaired by Dr.
Ken Stuart, President and Director of the Seattle Biomedical
Research Institute (www.sbri.org).
